Replace Bathroom Sink Drain Pipe In Wall

Replacing a bathroom sink drain pipe in the wall may seem like a daunting task, but it is actually a fairly straightforward project that can be completed in a few hours. With the right tools and materials, you can save yourself the cost of calling a plumber.

Tools and Materials

Before you begin, gather the following tools and materials:

Adjustable wrench
Phillips head screwdriver
Flat head screwdriver
Pliers
Hack saw
PVC pipe (1-1/2 inch diameter)
PVC pipe cutter
PVC cement
Primer
Sink drain
Putty knife
Plumbers putty
Flashlight

Step 1: Remove the Old Drain Pipe

Turn off the water supply to the sink. Use a flashlight to look under the sink and locate the old drain pipe. Loosen the nuts that hold the pipe in place using an adjustable wrench. Pull the old pipe out of the wall.

Step 2: Cut the New Drain Pipe

Measure the length of the old drain pipe. Cut a new piece of PVC pipe to the same length using a PVC pipe cutter.

Step 3: Prime and Glue the Pipe

Apply primer to the ends of the new pipe and the inside of the drain hole in the wall. Allow the primer to dry for a few minutes. Apply PVC cement to the ends of the pipe and the inside of the drain hole. Insert the new pipe into the drain hole and twist it back and forth slightly to ensure that the cement is evenly distributed.

Step 4: Secure the Pipe

Hold the pipe in place for a few minutes until the cement sets. Use an adjustable wrench to tighten the nuts that hold the pipe in place.

Step 5: Install the Sink Drain

Apply plumbers putty to the rim of the sink drain. Place the drain in the sinkhole and tighten the nuts that hold it in place. Wipe away any excess plumbers putty.

Step 6: Turn on the Water Supply

Turn on the water supply to the sink and check for leaks. If there are any leaks, tighten the nuts that hold the drain pipe in place or the nuts that hold the sink drain in place.
