How To Refinish A Cast Iron Sink
Cast iron sinks are a popular choice for many homeowners because they are durable and easy to clean. However, over time, cast iron sinks can become dull and scratched. If you're looking to restore your cast iron sink to its former glory, you can refinish it yourself with a few simple steps.
Materials You'll Need:
- Trisodium phosphate (TSP)
- Scrub brush
- Bucket
- Rubber gloves
- Sandpaper (120-grit, 220-grit, 400-grit)
- Orbital sander (optional)
- Rust-oleum enamel paint
- Paintbrush
- Rags
Step 1: Clean the sink
The first step is to clean the sink thoroughly. This will remove any dirt, grime, or grease that could interfere with the refinishing process. To clean the sink, mix 1/4 cup of TSP in 1 gallon of warm water. Apply the solution to the sink and scrub it with a scrub brush. Rinse the sink thoroughly with clean water and allow it to dry completely.
Step 2: Sand the sink
Once the sink is clean, you need to sand it to remove any rust or scratches. Start with 120-grit sandpaper and sand the entire surface of the sink. Once you've sanded the sink with 120-grit sandpaper, switch to 220-grit sandpaper and sand the sink again. Finally, switch to 400-grit sandpaper and sand the sink a third time. If you have an orbital sander, you can use it to speed up the sanding process.
Step 3: Clean the sink again
Once you've sanded the sink, you need to clean it again to remove any dust or debris. Wipe the sink down with a damp cloth and allow it to dry completely.
Step 4: Apply the paint
Now it's time to apply the paint. Use a paintbrush to apply a thin, even coat of Rust-Oleum enamel paint to the sink. Allow the paint to dry for 24 hours.
Step 5: Apply a second coat of paint
Once the first coat of paint is dry, apply a second coat. Allow the paint to dry for 24 hours.
Step 6: Cure the paint
Once the second coat of paint is dry, you need to cure the paint. To do this, place the sink in a warm, dry place and allow it to cure for 72 hours.
Step 7: Enjoy your newly refinished sink!
Once the paint is cured, your sink will be refinished and looking like new. Enjoy your newly refinished sink!
