How To Install A New Bathroom Sink Drain

Replacing a bathroom sink drain is a relatively simple task that can be completed in under an hour. It is a great way to improve the appearance of your bathroom and prevent leaks. With the right tools and materials, you can easily replace your old drain with a new one. Here are the steps on how to install a new bathroom sink drain:

Materials You Will Need:

  • New bathroom sink drain
  • Pliers
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Putty knife
  • Plumber's putty
  • Rags

Step 1: Turn Off the Water Supply

Before you begin, turn off the water supply to the sink. This will prevent water from leaking out when you remove the old drain. To turn off the water supply, locate the shut-off valves under the sink and turn them clockwise.

Step 2: Loosen the Old Drain

Use pliers to loosen the old drain. The drain is held in place by a nut that is located under the sink. Turn the nut counterclockwise to loosen it. Once the nut is loose, you can remove the old drain by pulling it straight up.

Step 3: Clean the Drain Hole

Once the old drain is removed, clean the drain hole. Use a putty knife to remove any old putty or debris from the drain hole. Wipe the drain hole clean with a rag.

Step 4: Apply Plumber's Putty

Apply a ring of plumber's putty around the base of the new drain. Plumber's putty is a type of sealant that helps to create a watertight seal between the drain and the sink. Be sure to apply the plumber's putty evenly around the base of the drain.

Step 5: Insert the New Drain

Insert the new drain into the drain hole. Push the drain down into the hole until it is flush with the sink. Tighten the nut under the sink to secure the drain in place. Turn the nut clockwise until it is snug.

Step 6: Turn on the Water Supply

Turn on the water supply to the sink. Check for leaks around the drain. If there are any leaks, tighten the nut under the sink further. Once you are sure that there are no leaks, you can finish installing the drain.

Step 7: Install the Stopper

If your new drain came with a stopper, install it now. The stopper is usually held in place by a screw. Insert the screw into the hole in the stopper and tighten it until the stopper is secure.

Step 8: Clean Up

Clean up any excess plumber's putty from around the drain. Use a rag to wipe away any putty that has squeezed out from under the drain. Your new bathroom sink drain is now installed and ready to use.
