How To Install Bathroom Sink Drain

Installing a bathroom sink drain is a relatively simple plumbing task that can be completed in a few hours. By following these step-by-step instructions, you can save yourself the cost of hiring a plumber.

Before you begin, gather the following tools and materials:

Adjustable wrench
Plumber's putty
New drain assembly
Flashlight
Bucket

Once you have all of your tools and materials, follow these steps:

1. Turn off the water supply to the sink.

Locate the shut-off valves under the sink and turn them clockwise to turn off the water supply. If there are no shut-off valves, you will need to turn off the water supply to your entire home.

2. Remove the old drain assembly.

Place the bucket under the drain to catch any water that may leak out. Use the adjustable wrench to loosen the slip nut that holds the drain assembly in place. Once the slip nut is loose, you can remove the old drain assembly by pulling it up through the drain hole.

3. Clean the drain hole.

Use a flashlight to inspect the drain hole for any debris or old plumber's putty. Remove any debris with a wire brush or a pair of tweezers. Apply a thin bead of plumber's putty around the drain hole.

4. Install the new drain assembly.

Insert the new drain assembly into the drain hole. Tighten the slip nut by hand until it is snug. Use the adjustable wrench to tighten the slip nut further, but do not overtighten it.

5. Connect the drain assembly to the sink drainpipe.

Use the adjustable wrench to tighten the nuts that connect the drain assembly to the sink drainpipe. Do not overtighten the nuts.

6. Restore the water supply to the sink.

Turn on the shut-off valves under the sink to restore the water supply. Check for any leaks around the drain assembly. If there are any leaks, tighten the slip nut or the nuts that connect the drain assembly to the sink drainpipe.
