How To Fix A Leaky Kitchen Sink

A leaky kitchen sink is a common problem that can be easily fixed with a few simple tools. By following these steps, you can save yourself the cost of calling a plumber.

Step 1: Gather Your Tools

Before you start, you will need to gather the following tools:

Adjustable wrench
Phillips head screwdriver
Flat head screwdriver
Plumber's putty
Teflon tape
Replacement washer (if necessary)

Step 2: Turn Off the Water Supply

The first step is to turn off the water supply to the sink. There are usually two shut-off valves located under the sink, one for the hot water and one for the cold water. Turn both valves clockwise until they are fully closed.

Step 3: Remove the Aerator

If the leak is coming from the faucet, you will need to remove the aerator. The aerator is the small, round piece that is screwed onto the end of the faucet. Use a wrench to loosen the aerator and remove it.

Step 4: Inspect the Washer

Once you have removed the aerator, you will see a washer. The washer is a rubber gasket that creates a seal between the aerator and the faucet. Inspect the washer for any signs of wear or damage. If the washer is damaged, it will need to be replaced.

Step 5: Apply Plumber's Putty

If the washer is in good condition, you can apply plumber's putty to the threads of the faucet. Plumber's putty is a sticky substance that helps to create a watertight seal. Wrap a small amount of plumber's putty around the threads of the faucet and then screw the aerator back on.

Step 6: Tighten the Packing Nut

If the leak is coming from the base of the faucet, you will need to tighten the packing nut. The packing nut is located at the base of the faucet, where the handle meets the body of the faucet. Use a wrench to tighten the packing nut until the leak stops.

Step 7: Apply Teflon Tape

If the leak is coming from the connection between the faucet and the water supply lines, you will need to apply Teflon tape to the threads of the water supply lines. Teflon tape is a thin, thread-like material that helps to create a watertight seal. Wrap the Teflon tape around the threads of the water supply lines and then screw the water supply lines back into the faucet.

Step 8: Turn on the Water Supply

Once you have completed all of the steps, you can turn on the water supply to the sink. Check for any leaks and if there are any leaks, tighten the connections until the leaks stop.
