## Kitchen Sink Garbage Disposal Clogged

A clogged garbage disposal can be a major inconvenience, but it's usually a relatively easy fix. Here are a few simple steps you can follow to clear the clog and get your disposal running smoothly again.

**1. Turn off the power**

Before you start working on the disposal, make sure to turn off the power at the circuit breaker or fuse box. This will prevent the disposal from accidentally turning on while you're working on it.

**2. Remove the splash guard**

The splash guard is the rubber or plastic cover that fits over the top of the disposal. It's usually held in place by a few screws. Remove the screws and lift off the splash guard.

**3. Look for the reset button**

The reset button is a small red button that's usually located on the bottom of the disposal. If the disposal is clogged, the reset button may have popped out. Press the reset button to reset the disposal.

**4. Try running the disposal**

With the splash guard removed and the reset button pressed, try running the disposal again. If the disposal starts running, the clog is likely cleared. If the disposal still doesn't run, there may be a more serious problem that requires professional attention.

**5. Use a wrench to turn the flywheel**

If the reset button doesn't work, you can try using a wrench to turn the flywheel. The flywheel is the large metal disc that's located at the bottom of the disposal. Carefully insert a wrench into the slots in the flywheel and turn it back and forth until the clog is cleared.

**6. Call a plumber**

If you've tried all of the above steps and the disposal is still clogged, it's time to call a plumber. A plumber will be able to diagnose the problem and make the necessary repairs.

**Here are a few tips to help prevent your garbage disposal from clogging in the future:**

* Avoid putting hard objects, such as bones, fruit pits, and egg shells, down the disposal.

* Run cold water while the disposal is running to help flush out food particles.

* Grind up citrus peels or ice cubes occasionally to help clean the blades.

* Have your garbage disposal professionally serviced every few years to keep it running smoothly.
