How to Seal a Bathroom Sink Drain

A leaky bathroom sink drain can be a nuisance and waste water. Luckily, it's a relatively easy fix that can be done in a few minutes with a few simple tools.

1. Gather your materials.

You will need the following materials:

A putty knife
A tube of plumber's putty
A flashlight
A wet rag

2. Clean the drain.

Remove the drain stopper and clean the drain opening with a wet rag. Be sure to remove any hair, soap scum, or other debris.

3. Apply plumber's putty.

Roll a small piece of plumber's putty into a snake-like shape. Apply the putty around the base of the drain flange, where it meets the sink. Be sure to press the putty firmly into place.

4. Tighten the drain flange.

Use a flashlight to look under the sink and locate the drain flange. The drain flange is the metal ring that holds the drain in place. Tighten the drain flange by turning it clockwise with a wrench.

5. Reinstall the drain stopper.

Once the drain flange is tight, reinstall the drain stopper. Be sure to tighten the stopper by turning it clockwise until it is snug.

6. Test the drain.
