When Did The Indianapolis Sink?
The Indianapolis, a United States Navy heavy cruiser, sank on July 30, 1945, in the Philippine Sea, approximately 120 nautical miles (220 kilometers) from Leyte Gulf. The ship was returning from a mission to deliver parts for the atomic bomb to Tinian when it was torpedoed by the Japanese submarine I-58. Of the 1,196 crew members on board, only 316 survived. The sinking of the Indianapolis was the single greatest loss of life in the history of the U.S. Navy.
The Indianapolis was commissioned in 1932 and served in the Pacific during World War II. The ship participated in several major battles, including the Battle of the Coral Sea, the Battle of Midway, and the Battle of Leyte Gulf. The survivors of the sinking were left adrift in the water for several days. They were exposed to the sun, the rain, and the sharks. Many of them died from their injuries, from dehydration, or from exposure to the elements.
On August 2, 1945, the survivors were rescued by the destroyer USS Bassett. The Bassett brought the survivors to Leyte Gulf, where they were given medical attention.
