How To Change Drain In Bathroom Sink

A bathroom sink drain is an essential component that allows water to flow out of the sink and into the plumbing system. Over time, drains can become clogged with hair, soap scum, and other debris, which can slow down the flow of water or even cause it to stop completely. If you're experiencing problems with your bathroom sink drain, you may need to replace it. While this is a relatively simple plumbing repair, it's important to follow the steps carefully to avoid any leaks or other problems.

Materials You'll Need

  1. New bathroom sink drain
  2. Adjustable wrench
  3. Phillips head screwdriver
  4. Putty knife
  5. Plumber's putty
  6. Flashlight
  7. Bucket

Step 1: Turn Off the Water Supply

Before you start working on the drain, you need to turn off the water supply to the sink. There are usually two shut-off valves under the sink, one for the hot water and one for the cold water. Turn both valves clockwise to turn off the water.

Step 2: Remove the Old Drain

Once the water supply is turned off, you can remove the old drain. Start by unscrewing the drain stopper from the sink. Then, use an adjustable wrench to loosen the slip nut that holds the drain in place. Be careful not to overtighten the wrench, as you could damage the sink.

Once the slip nut is loose, you can pull the drain out of the sink. If the drain is stuck, you may need to use a putty knife to gently pry it loose.

Step 3: Clean the Sink Drain Hole

Once the old drain is removed, you need to clean the sink drain hole. Use a flashlight to inspect the hole for any debris or damage. If there is any debris, remove it with a putty knife or your fingers.

If the drain hole is damaged, you may need to replace the entire sink. However, if the damage is minor, you may be able to repair it with plumber's putty.

Step 4: Apply Plumber's Putty to the New Drain

Before you install the new drain, you need to apply plumber's putty to the rim of the drain. Plumber's putty is a sticky substance that helps to create a watertight seal between the drain and the sink.

To apply plumber's putty, simply roll a small piece into a rope and then press it around the rim of the drain. Make sure to apply the putty evenly and to press it firmly into the sink.

Step 5: Install the New Drain

Once the plumber's putty is in place, you can install the new drain. Start by inserting the drain into the sink drain hole. Then, hand-tighten the slip nut until it is snug.

Once the slip nut is hand-tight, use an adjustable wrench to tighten it further. Be careful not to overtighten the wrench, as you could damage the sink.

Step 6: Install the Drain Stopper

Once the drain is installed, you can install the drain stopper. Simply screw the stopper into the drain until it is hand-tight. Then, tighten the stopper further with an adjustable wrench.

Once the drain stopper is installed, turn on the water supply and check for leaks. If there are any leaks, tighten the slip nut or the drain stopper until the leak stops.
